About the site

We are an online platform that connects visitors with locals who can provide unique experiences or travel advice. Having traveled extensively we have had some amazing travel experiences. Our best and safest travel experiences have always been with local people who speak the language and know the place inside out. We know that your free time is precious, so we are trying to get you off that main street with overpriced restaurants and into the hidden gems to see how the place really works. Hopefully this site helps you get a real flavour of a place, its culture and lifestyle. At A Vida Local we believe the local people enrich your travels as much as the sights do – enjoy!

Locals Guides

A Vida Local is about connecting visitors with local people to provide unique, safe, tailored travel experiences and advice. We typically expect a local to have lived in the area for at least 2 years and have a valuable understanding of their area.
There’s a fair bit of flexibility in this but it’s all about you creating a unique experience and providing local insights to visitors into what every day life is like for you. You can provide a whole range of services, such as; local walking tours of an area you know, taking a group of people out surfing or teaching someone how to cook a local delicacy. If you are not able to commit to meeting people for experiences, why not share your knowledge and help visitors plan their trip and provide live support whilst they are in the area. Whatever you decide to provide you just need to be clear on what is included and excluded in the price you decide to charge.

We do recommend that you have public liability insurance if your listing(s) involve any kind of activity where a visitor could injury themselves and find you liable. If you plan on taking people around National Parks please check that you have the relevant certificates to show people around as you could receive a fine.
A Vida Local will make a PayPal payment to you 3-5 working days after the end of each month for all the services you have completed during that month.
It’s entirely up to you as the Local to set your price for any experience or one days virtual advice/support. Make sure to quote the total price for the experience (this should include all anticipated costs and makes sure you detail these in your listing). i.e if you are taking visitors around a historic site you will need to specify this in the included section.
You’ll get paid based on the rate you set for the accepted booking - less the A Vida Local Connection fee (15%).
A Vida Local receives a 15% Connection fee for every completed booking. This is to cover the cost of maintaining the website and also marketing your listing(s) to visitors.
The first thing to think about is what local information would make the trip unique, you might know where the best coffee places are for example. The other aspect is being able to tailor your knowledge to what the visitor wants to do while in your area, e.g if they’re into fitness it might be about finding the coolest places to swim or the best runs to go on. Ultimately look to fill their days with interesting things they like to do, what are the best times to go, maps and help on how to get from A to B, expected costs and other useful information.
A lot depends on what experience you are offering and what you've stated in your 'included' section but some valued items could be a map with your favourite things to see and do, some water, sunscreen or umbrella etc. please be clear on what is included and excluded, we want to avoid visitors not fully understanding your offering.
We are trying to grow a trust based platform that is open to free speech. We will obviously remove anything that is inappropriate or unfair but we will keep up reviews so visitors and locals have access to useful information when booking. Please don’t, as should there be any concerns or disputes about arrangements and services provided we won’t be able to assist.
We try to minimize cancellations for our visitors, if as a Local, you cancel a confirmed event you will not receive any payment and frequent cancellations may result in your account being unpublished. If the visitor cancels more than 7 days before the start date, we will refund the visitor and you will not receive any payment. If the visitor cancels within 7 days of the start date, we will provide you with up to 50% of the total payment to compensate for any inconvenience.

Visitors

You can start to search the variety of local experiences and advice on this site. To interact or book a Local you will need to set up a basic profile. Once that is done you are ready to go.
PayPal are the number one experts in online payments so please process payments through our safe and secure website, that way we have proof of the transaction and in the unlikely event there is a dispute we can reference this.
We will notify you when a Local has accepted your Booking Request. Please visit your Bookings to Action page, select ‘Pay’ and you will be directed through the PayPal payment process to confirm the booking.
If as a visitor you need to cancel a booking for any reason you have up until 7 days before the meeting. Anything closer than this and we will still need to pay the local that you booked.
As a visitor if you cancel more than 7 days before the booking start date we will refund you less any nominal transaction fees incurred by A Vida Local. As a visitor if you cancel within 7 days of the booking start date we will still need to pay the Local for any inconvenience so we will not be able to offer you a refund.If in the unlikely event a Local has to cancel we will refund you in full.
We want you to have the best time both showing people around and when looking around but more importantly we want you to be safe. The nature of the shared economy means outside of our verifications of Locals we can’t know everybody so promise us you’ll follow the below safety tips:
  • Arrange a public meeting place and make sure you are happy with the suggested address and time
  • Where possible always use our website for communication and bookings
  • Use PayPal for payments so you do not have to carry large amounts of cash and so cash exchanges are not disputed.
Just select reset my password in the login screen and follow the prompts.
Your email address and other details can be edited once logged in by selecting Edit My Account.
